The 17th international Microfinance Institutions Conference and Exhibition, held biennially, has officially come to a close.
The three-day 17th International Microfinance Conference and Exhibition, hosted at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, brought together more than 500 participants from across the microfinance sector. The event successfully concluded after extensive discussions and engagements.
Held under the theme “Microfinance for the Next Generation: Unlocking Opportunities through Innovation, Inclusion, and Resilient Financial Services,” the conference aimed to expand financial access in Ethiopia and support microfinance institutions in advancing to higher levels through technology.
It also served as a platform for modernizing the sector and facilitating knowledge and experience sharing.
The conference was organized by the Association of Ethiopian Microfinance Institutions/AEMFI/ in collaboration with the European Union and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
It attracted over 500 professionals, researchers, and guests from different parts of the world.
According to the Association’s of Ethiopian Microfinance Institution/AEMFI/ Chief Executive Officer, Ato Teshome Kebede, Ethiopia’s microfinance sector has recorded remarkable growth over the past 28 years. Currently, there are 62 microfinance institutions operating nationwide, six of which have transitioned into banks.
While these institutions have provided financial services to over 5 million citizens, a significant portion of the population still remains underserved.
He further noted that the financial sector is undergoing a major transformation. The entry of foreign banks into the domestic market, along with the growing involvement of technology companies, is expected to intensify competition in the sector.
To remain competitive, microfinance institutions have been urged to move away from traditional systems and rapidly adopt digital solutions.
During the conference, which took place from March 24–26, 2026, experts from Africa, Asia, Europe, and America shared their experiences. The event also featured numerous panel discussions led by seasoned professionals and industry leaders, focusing on emerging technologies and policy directions in the sector.
Dire Microfinance was among the participants in this global conference. The institution presented its historical background, achievements, and current operational status. A detailed presentation was delivered by Deputy CEO and MIS Director, Ato Fasil Getachew, highlighting ongoing efforts to modernize services and integrate digital and innovative solutions.
Through its participation in the exhibition held alongside the conference, Dire Microfinance also received encouraging feedback from attendees regarding its services and outreach.
In recognition of its significant contribution to the success of the conference, Dire Microfinance was awarded special acknowledgment during the closing ceremony.
Established in 1999, the Association of Ethiopian Microfinance Institutions /AEMFI/ is a leading organization serving as a platform that connects stakeholders within the sector.
